ABC's View from the Bay

The executive producers asked Drue to talk about Zen and how it applies to our information over-loaded lives in the Valley.

Simplicity, Asymmetry, Tranquility, Immediacy, Naturalness…

These Zen tenets are invaluable for business men and women, VCs, executives, entrepreneurs, students. In short, anyone creating technology or being shaped by technology.

I saw you on TV and I also looked at all of the you tube videos. I spent a lot of meaningul moments at your web blog and sites. I know you will continue to increase in abundance.

You dress so beautifully and your spirit shows through. I’m over 56 years old and I was looking for inspiration on simplifying my life and appearance. I’ll stay tuned. You have a lot to offer.

    Thank you for being there.
    Sandra

Hi Drue! Your comment on the spring cleaning and the coffee bean made one of Basho’s haiku come to mind:

    Yes, spring has come
    This morning a nameless hill
    Is shrouded in mist

It is from his poems “On Love and Barley”. Thanks!

Drue, what excellent advice for us all! I love the way you present things in such a “simple” way. More times than not, we get wound up over something that is really not complex at all. I love the scenario about dropping the rock in the pond. Thank you for sharing your strength with us.

Hi Drue! I loved the TV spot. Spread the word for all of us to pay attention to what is really important in life–that word may just make the world a little better place to hang our hats.

It was great meeting you out in the Valley and I hope I get the chance again.

    Hi Drue,
Congrats on the TV spot! I really enjoyed your insights about taking time out to experience our own personal complete moment of Zen by utilising all five of the senses…

An important reminder of what’s truly important in life.

I love the juxtaposition of Zen as being both relaxing and energising at the same time: it’s a form of personal calm like no other.

Thanks for sharing, and for bringing us our own individual Zen space on the internet!

Dear Dru – just want to let you know what an inspiration you are and how proud I am of you. You and Bill Fenwick are reaching out to so many people in this area – those of influence and those of us that can learn from them.
    Bravo and carry on.
PS – do you still play the flute??
    Always a fan,
    Diane

Drue, I simply marvel at your pre-Zen-tation skills – always so calm, so eloquent, so fluid. There really couldn’t be a better person to discuss the concepts of Zen. Although for me Zen predominently brings the ideology of simplicity to mind, I LOVE the notion of the 3rd Zen principle that you bring to light: Break Your Rhythm. I am going to do my best to take this to heart. I think as we get older and more grounded it is increasingly difficult to break out of our daily routines. Your words have inspired me to take the plunge, take a step in a different direction and re-energize. Thanks for the nudge. I needed it.

Great lessons for life Drue. With all of the madness that I’m facing this month, your suggestions will be put to good use in helping my family and I to maintain our sanity. Thanks again!

Your interview has inspired me to clear away some clutter. (Now the guys at Salvation Army and Good Will know my car….) The mental clutter is next….

    Thanks, Drue! – Elena

Drue, so glad to see you on the local airwaves! Great principles for all of us to snap out of the daily grind, and find our new, true selves. There’s a diamond inside all of us waiting to be polished off from the everyday dust, which is really not that hard to find. Thanks for the continued reminder to all of us!

  13. Joe Andrieu

    Drue,

Wonderful. I especially liked the reminder to live in the moment with disregard to what came before or what came after.

Also, the invitation to break your rhythm and let that moment ripple throughout your whole day, evoked a visceral reaction in me. I could feel the moment wash over me. Wow. It was also fun to see your interviews resonate with that same message.

    Powerful stuff.

Thanks for connecting the so often crazed technology world with Zen. Consider me a new subscriber.

    p.s.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t cheer your call for simplicity with a pointer to my own commentary last September on our information-overloaded life: http://blog.joeandrieu.com/2007/09/24/change-of-ages/

    Drue,

Excellent interview….I learned quite a bit about the principles of Zen in the 5 minute interview.

Simplicity is a concept that we all need to embrace a bit more…especially those of us heavily involved in technology ventures.

You probably have this planned, but could you give us some pointers in the future on recommended reading for those of us interested in exploring Zen principles in more detail?

What a great interview; very simplified, very in the moment. One of the wonderful aspects of your message is that it can be repeated again and again and be like hearing for the first time, every time i.e.,

    Drue,

I love both, simplicity and technology, the latter in a justifiable measure; it is a wonderful idea, to bring the two together. I admire how you fitted Obama in that framework. Also your site has so many valuable references. I enjoyed watching Guy Kawasaki lecturing on entrepeneurship. I read him when he was writing for MacUser and enjoyed his pearls of wisdom; a nice guy and you, Drue, are a scent of fresh grass.
    Keep on growing.

    A quick follow-up to my post #16:

My whole life I’ve been told by family to “slow down and take a deep breath”…. I never get tired of hearing that phrase, and it made me think of this quote from a wonderful person who touched many, many lives throughout her life.

“Every breath, well lived, makes yesterday a dream of happiness and tomorrow ecstasy.”
